Smart Bilge + 5PPM Type Approval Installation guide -Customer procedure

A clear, easy-to-follow guide to upgrading your smart bilge + to include DNV 5PPM type approval

Introduction

This procedure will aid crew or Rivertrace approved engineers to install all necessary hardware and software to gain DNV-GL 5ppm approval on their SMART BILGE+ oil content meter.

In essence, it is critical that three main components are installed, in order meet compliance criteria:

  • SMART BILGE+ Sample flow switch hardware kit – Rivertrace Part No: 113619

  • SMART BILGE+ Sample Flow switch software activation – 113715

  • SMART BILGE+ 5ppm type approval software activation – 113719

All of the above parts can be purchased in one kit from Rivertrace, as below:

  •  SMART BILGE+ 5PPM type approval kit - 200109

First Steps

You must first assess your existing SMART BILGE monitor and ensure that the check list below can be successfully ticked off in its entirety:

  • The SMART BILGE monitor you have is a SMART BILGE+ variant. This is identifiable due to its orange “+” after the SMART BILGE text, above the display.

  • You have a “Sample flow switch hardware kit” installed and in use, or the kit to hand (Including accessory activation PIN – Rivertrace part number 113715), to install now.

  • You have your accessory activation PIN to hand for the 5ppm type approval upgrade – Rivertrace part number 113719 .

  • Your regular MEPC.107(49) Rivertrace calibration certificate is present onboard the vessel and within its calibration period (5 years or at IOPP survey renewal).

  • The works are carried out by competent crew or a Rivertrace approved engineer.

For Rivertrace to generate the correct activation PIN(s), we require some information. Please use the following points as a checklist to obtain your PIN.

  • Rivertrace Sales order number for your requested software parameters.

  • Which parameters you wish to activate:

AutoClean wiper.

5ppm Type approval

Sample Flow Switch.

GPS Input.

Oily water separator discharge flowmeter.

  •  Any number or combination of parameters can be used together.

  •   Serial number of your SmartBilge+ controller PCB.

  • -Confirmation that you have the necessary hardware onboard for the parameter (your PIN will expire 5 days after issuing so the upgrade should be planned in good time).

Please contact sales@rivertrace.com to obtain your activation PIN(s).

Precautions

  • Ensure that it is not possible for any discharge to be possible throughout this entire process and all power, air and sample to the SMART BILGE+, Oily water Separator and alarms system are isolated.
  •  Ensure that the overboard valve is chained shut to ensure no discharge can take place.

Flow switch Installation
Skip this section if your SMART BILGE+ is already using a Rivertrace sample flow switch.

1) Remove both the fresh water and sample lines from the solenoid valve.

2) Remove the solenoid valve from the back plate at the four M4 Allen screws, ensuring no washers are lost

3) Unplug the 6mm push fitting that seals the solenoid valve to the measuring cell.

4) Separate the Solenoid valve from the mounting bracket by removing the four M4 hex head bolts, ensuring that no washers are lost.

5) Remove the sample inlet spacer (This is no longer required).

6) Fit the stainless-steel adaptor into the flow switch as shown below, using a suitable sealant:

7) Fit the 90-degree stainless-steel elbow into the normally open port of the solenoid valve using a suitable sealant.

8) Fit the flow switch assembly into the 90-degree elbow compression fitting of the solenoid valve and tighten in the orientation show below:

9) Refit the solenoid valve assembly onto the mounting bracket.

10) Fit the solenoid valve and bracket assembly back onto the SMART BILGE+ backplate using the four screws, ensuring the 6mm hose is located in the bottom of the measuring cell.

11) Remove the front cover of the SMART BILGE+ Control module (Display side) using the four Philips head screws.

12) Remove the clear protective cover from the control PCB by unscrewing the four captive flat head screws.

13) Pass the cable from the flow switch through a cable gland into the control module and tighten well.

14) Terminate the two wires from the flow switch into “FLOW SW” terminal of the SMART BILGE+ control PCB as highlighted below (Polarity does not matter in this case).

15) Refit the clear protective cover from the control PCB using the four captive flat head screws.

16) Refit the front cover of the SMART BILGE+ Control module (Display side) using the four Philips head screws.

17) Refit clean water and sample pipework as removed. The sample line must now enter the flow switch, and the fresh water is connected directly to the solenoid valve.

18) Flow switch mechanical installation is now complete.

Software accessories

The SMART BILGE+ has multiple bolt-on options that meet and exceed MEPC.107(49) requirements. The aim is to increase security, ease interactions from crew and to capture valuable data that can be utilised for both compliance and performance enhancements.

The bolt-on upgrade kits can be retrofitted to all SMART BILGE+ analysers by crew, with both procedure and guidance from our comprehensive online knowledge base. This allows your fleet to expand into the new generation of bilge monitors as the benefits are realised by crew, management, owners and inspectors. Activating your software accessories

Software activation PINs have a 5-day window in which they are active. Once this period has expired, a new PIN will need to be requested from Rivertrace.

Activating your software accessories within your SMART BILGE+ is a simple task that can be carried out by crew or Rivertrace approved engineers.

1) At your SMART BILGE+, ensure that power is ON and the display is active.

2) Using the down button, scroll through the customer menu to find “Accessories” and press the enter button.

3) Scroll down to find the accessory that you wish to activate and press the enter button.

4) Scroll down to “ACTIVATE” and press Enter. You will then be prompted to enter your activation PIN. Please note that each PIN is specific to which parameter you are activating. Once your PIN is entered, press the Enter button and follow on screen prompts.

5) Repeat this for each required parameter, using a unique PIN number for each.

a.  For DNV 5PPM Type approval, “5PPM max alarm” and “Flow Switch” are mandatory.
b.  The “Flow Switch” delay must be set to under 5 seconds.

6) On completion of the above steps, cycle the power to your SMART BILGE+.
       a. Your PINs will expire within 5 days of issuing and lock the new settings in place to be tamper                       proof.

Testing
Once installation and activation are complete for your Flow switch and 5ppm maximum alarm set points, you must check these parameters to ensure your SMART BILGE+ is performing within its necessary specifications:

  •  Alarms activate at a maximum of 5ppm.

  •  Alarms activate is no flow is detected though the measuring cell.

To test the parameters, the below simple steps must be trialled:

5ppm alarms

1.  In the customer menu, ensure that the alarms points are set to 5ppm and the delays are set to 0 seconds.

2. Ensure that the oily water separator is running and a low PPM is displayed at your SMART BILGE+ display (<5ppm).

3. Check that the alarms are OFF, there is no engine room audible alarm active and the overboard valve is energised, allowing a potential discharge.

4. press and hold your UP button for 5 seconds to induce a “Test cycle”.

5. The SMART BILGE+ will then automatically start counting the PPM upwards in 1ppm increments.

6. When the PPM reading reaches 5ppm, the alarms will activate causing the overboard valve to close and your ships engine room audible alarm to sound within 5 seconds of 5ppm being breached.

Flow Alarm
  1. Ensure that the oily water separator is running and a low PPM is displayed at your SMART BILGE+ display (<5ppm).
  2. Check that the alarms are OFF, there is no engine room audible alarm active and the overboard valve is energised, allowing a potential discharge.
  3. Stop the flow to your SMART BILGE+.
  4. When flow stops, check that the “FLOW TOO LOW” message is displayed. The alarms will activate causing the overboard valve to close and your ships engine room audible alarm to sound within 5 seconds of flow stopping being breached.
  5. Upgrade Complete
