Navigating MEPC Rules with Rivertrace Technology
Flow Chart illustrating the relationship between Key MEPC regulations and corresponding Rivertrace products
MEPC .60(33) MEPC.107(49) MEPC.108(49) & MEPC.240(65) MEPC.259 (68)
1. MEPC. 60 (33) - Early Bilge Water Regulation (1992)
MEPC.60(33) was introduced to update and standardize the performance and testing requirements for pollution prevention equipment used in machinery space bilges, particularly oil filtering equipment and oil content meters.
- Limitations:
- No requirement for data logging or automatic stopping devices.
- Less stringent testing and verification protocols.
Rivertrace Products:
- OCD 2M
- OCD CM
The OCD1M and OCD2M were replaced by the OCD CM
2. MEPC.107(49) – Bilge Water Discharge Regulations
Adopted to ensure that machinery space bilge water is treated before discharge, MEPC.107(49) mandates that oil content must not exceed 15 ppm and that discharge must be automatically stopped if this limit is exceeded.
Rivertrace Products:
- Supersedes: MEPC.60(33)
- Applies to: All vessels of 400 gross Tons and above with bilge water treatment systems installed after 1 January 2005
3. MEPC.108(49) – Tanker Slop Discharge Regulations
This regulation governs the discharge of oil residues (slops) from oil tankers, requiring continuous monitoring and control systems to prevent marine pollution.

4. MEPC.240(65) – Guidelines on Biofuels
As the shipping industry explores alternative fuels to reduce its carbon footprint, MEPC.240(65) provides guidance on the safe and environmentally sound use of biofuels.
Rivertrace Product:
5. MEPC.259(68) – Exhaust Gas Cleaning Systems (EGCS)
To reduce sulfur oxide (SOx) emissions from ships, this regulation outlines performance and testing standards for scrubbers and other exhaust gas cleaning technologies.
