Smart Bilge flow switch installation guide

Installation guide for sample flow switch to Smart Bilge, Oil content meter

Introduction

The Smart Cell bilge monitor can be equipped with an optional flow switch, and this article provides installation guidance. Installers must ensure power is isolated during installation and refrain from working on live equipment.

The flow switch necessitates a minimum input water pressure of 0.3 bar and a flow rate of 0.8 liters per minute to operate effectively.

If these conditions are not met, rerouting the separator outlet pipework may be necessary.

Installation kit

The Smart Bilge flow switch installation kit (part number 113619) includes the following parts:

113681

Spare Flow Switch Assy         Flow Switch Assembly
109827 Adaptor ¼’’ OD x ¼’’ BSP Male straight stem adaptor       Male Straight Stem Adapter
101505 ¼ ‘’ BSP x 6 mm OD Elbow          Elbow

Instructions

Preparing the Smart Bilge

Re-route the Cable:  Move the  clean water solenoid cable to pass under the valve mount and into its original cable gland on the Smart Bilge enclosure.

Remove Front Cover: Using small Philips screwdriver to remove the front cover of the microcontroller module.

Remove Protective Cover: Use a small flat-bladed screwdriver to take off the clear protective cover inside the enclosure.

Mounting the Flow Switch on the Solenoid

Remove the ¼” female  ¼” male connector from the solenoid, which requires detaching it from the black mounting bracket. Then, insert the straight stem adaptor (part number 109827) into the flow switch with suitable pipe sealant or PTFE tape, and attach the adaptor to the elbow, tightening it securely.

Solenoid

Route the flow switch cable through the gland shown below into the enclosure. If the gland is absent, drill a 13mm diameter hole for an M12 gland.

Tighten the cable gland around the flow switch cable before reattaching the solenoid to its bracket and securing the enclosure's protective cover and front cover

WARNING - The flow switch must be mounted on the sample line and NOT the fresh water line.

PCB

Connect the PCB : Connect the U-shaped PCB to the main PCB, ensuring proper  pin insertion.

Important! - Enabling the Flow Switch - PIN Activation

After installation of the flow switch and solenoid the power needs to be restored to the monitor.

Details on how to obtain your PIN, can be found here.

Once you have obtained your PIN, please enter the menu of your Smart Bilge Monitor and locate the "Accessories menu". The PIN can now be entered into the software for your chosen parameter.

This PIN remains active for 5 days before expiring.

Testing the Flow Switch

Start and Stop Flow: Begin and cease flow to the Smart Bilge.

Check for Errors: A flow error will be displayed, and both alarm relays will be activated each time the flow error appears on the LCD screen.

Maintenance

There is no user maintenance for the flow Switch although it can be dismantled for cleaning if it is contaminated with oil however, care should be taken when removing the flow switch cap as the spring inside can be damaged or lost. The flow switch will not operate without the spring or the slug inside it.
